I am (since August 2010) a Chief Research Scientist at the Department of Information and Computer Science at the School of Science of the Aalto University (formerly Helsinki University of Technology, TKK). My current tasks include leading the Data Mining: Theory and Applications research group as well as coordination of the research activities at the Department of Information and Computer Science.
I defended my doctoral thesis in theoretical physics in January 2001. From January 2001 to December 2008 I was a teaching researcher at the Department of Information and Computer Science of the Aalto University, and from January 2009 to July 2009 a research coordinator. From August 2009 to July 2010 I was a professor (pro tem) at the Department of Media Technology.
My other affiliations include the Algorithmic Data Analysis Research Programme of the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT as well as Algodan, a Finnish Centre of Excellence in Research. I am also a Docent (dosentti, often translated as Adjunct Professor) at the Department of Information and Computer Science.
My research interests include data mining, machine learning and related algorithms, or broadly, computational methods of data analysis. The application areas I have worked in include user modeling (especially modeling of eye movements) and ecological data analysis, including paleontology. [short biography]
I have planned and lectured several courses in computer and information science, including a post-graduate level course T-61.5010 Information visualization (lectured yearly 2001-2008) and a bachelor level course T-61.3050 Machine Learning: Basic Principles (lectured yearly 2007-2008).
